5 Elements Martial Arts - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

About us

5 Elements Martial Arts is a family and community oriented Martial Arts school, created in and serving South Calgary communities since 2004.

Regardless of age (5 Elements was the first preschool Martial Arts program in Calgary), size, interest or skill level, you will find a place here – 5 Elements Martial Arts offers classes in multiple disciplines, including Karate/Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Jiujitsu and Judo.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to continue an existing journey in the world of Martial Arts, we have a spot for you!

5 Elements Martial Arts trains hundreds of students each week, is recognized by the World Karate and Kickboxing Council, and is the largest standalone school in Western Canada with the most National and World Champions west of Ontario. We train competitive fighter at all levels, including UFC fighters, however, we are also passionate about and have extensive experience working with young children and individuals with special needs, and work hard at developing champions both inside and outside of the school.

5 Elements Martial Arts believes in a multifaceted approach to Martial Arts and understands that people want to train for reasons that list A to Z, including weight loss, getting fit, increasing flexibility and mobility, building self-confidence and self-esteem, improving focus and concentration, the desire to compete or are driven to earn a black belt.

As a result, we foster a very welcoming and inclusive environment at our school.

From Little Dragons students to long time teachers, many have been with us from our humble beginnings in a small, single dojo, to our current space, involving three fully functional dojos, all of our own equipment, fourteen hanging bags available for class usage, a spectator’s area, bathrooms and a private shower. For most, 5 Elements Martial Arts has become their place to belong.

So, welcome to 5 Elements Martial Arts,
and welcome home

Willian Gemmill

Renshi Bill has been passionate about martial arts throughout his life.  His interest spans the range of martial art discipline, history and philosophy.  His main pursuits include the Karate-Do (4th Degree Black Belt) of Shotokan and Goju-Ryu as well as the Chinese soft styles of Baqua Zhang, Yang Tai Chi Chuan and Hsing Yi Chuan. Zen Buddhism and Taoist Internal Alchemy are the central influences of his meditation practises. Lao-tzu’s Tao Te Ching, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, and Miyamoto Musashi’s The Book of Five Rings are foundational in his study of martial philosophy and strategy.

As a dedicated teacher, Bill firmly believes that martial arts can benefit everyone, young and old, with health and wellness of mind, body and spirit.

Eugene Helland

Eugene was drawn to martial arts from an early time when he knew it could enhance his life. His training began with years of boxing and an early introduction to karate. A scholastic understanding and appreciation of Zen Buddhism culminated in a significant sojourn at a Zen Buddhist ashram which solidified his perspective and conviction to pursue his training with Renshi Bill. He then became a devoted practitioner of: traditional Karate-Do, particularly Shotokan; Baqua Zhang Circle Walking; and an avid researcher in the directed studies of martial history and philosophy, techniques and strategy. For Eugene, his years of active training and working alongside Renshi Bill as his Sempai have been like a dream come true. As a result, Eugene’s energy embodies the qualities of a patient, kind and resilient practitioner.
