Karate originated in Japan and is mostly a system of self defense from a standing position with an emphasis on hand blocks and strikes. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that has ties to karate, and places a focus on kicks. Our Karate/Tae Kwon Do program incorporates elements from both disciplines to create a well-rounded curriculum that can be used as a solid base for practicing martial arts, while being a fun way to keep fit and enjoy some exercise.

At 5 Elements, we offer a variety of Karate/Tae Kwon Do classes covering anywhere from as little as age 3 all the way to adult. You’re never too young or too old to start training with us!

All students participating in karate programs must have a 5 Elements uniform, which is available for purchase at the front desk.

Thai kickboxing, known as the Art of the Eight Limbs. Muay Thai is primarily a stand-up martial art that utilizes fist, elbow, knee and foot strikes as well as clinching techniques. Known as “the gentle art”, jiu jitsu originated in Japan and was perfected in Brazil.  A form of self defense that is grappling-based, jiu jitsu focuses on the concept of being able to defend yourself against a larger assailant by using proper techinque and leverage and by utilizing joint locks and choke holds. Popularised in MMA and the UFC, jiu jitsu is what one can use when the fight “goes to the ground” and is a great practical martial art for people who are looking for self defense.

Jiu jitsu is also great for being a full body workout — techniques can incorporate the whole body and can help improve flexibility, balance and coordination.

All students participating in 5 Elements Jiu Jitsu programs must have a jiu jitsu gi, different from a karate gi, and must have a mouth guard if they’re interested in rolling (“sparring” in jiu jitsu.) 5 Elements does not offer no-gi jiu jitsu at this time. Gis can be ordered at the front desk.

Adult Jiu Jitsu

Ages 13-Adult. Students will be instructed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and learn movements, guards, sweeps and submissions in partnered drills and exercises, as well as in rolling sessions near the end of class. NOTE: Friday classes are intended as Advanced classes for students who are have colored belts.
